Dr. Denis Istrati is an international expert in coastal engineering, tsunamis, and multi-hazard risk assessment, serving as a faculty member in the Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering at Aarhus University and a research affiliate at the National Technical University of Athens. His research combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling with large-scale hydrodynamic experiments to quantify extreme hazard impacts on coastal infrastructure, including cultural heritage sites. Some of Dr. Istrati’s honors include the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, the JMSE 2022 Best Paper Award, the JMSE 2024 Outstanding Reviewer Award, and the 2024 Hamaguchi Group Award for the MAKEWAVES project. He contributed to the first-of-its-kind Tsunami Design Guidelines for Bridges in the US and the New European Bauhaus self-assessment method, serving as an expert in “Resilience to Extreme Events.” He also sits on the Coastal Hazards Advisory Board of the US NSF-funded Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance network and led the development of a next-generation cultural heritage risk framework within the EU project TRIQUETRA. He is presently involved in several national and European projects on ocean digital twins, climate risk, early warning, and nature-based adaptation, aiming to advance the multi-hazard resilience of the built environment.
