Biography

Secretary General of the Academy of Athens and Head of the Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology of the Academy of Athens.

Has served as Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Boston and Minnesota, and Scientific Collaborator at the University of Oslo.

He has been honored, among others, as an Honorary Professor of the Department of Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the University of Athens.

Throughout his academic career, he has founded numerous national and international research and educational centers. He has received many awards and has been honored with numerous prestigious distinctions in Greece and abroad for his scientific work. He has published hundreds of scientific papers in renowned international journals and has delivered hundreds of lectures at high-profile international conferences.

Professor Zerefos is internationally recognized for his research on the medium- and long-term variability of the ozone layer, ultraviolet solar radiation, the stratosphere, and the interactions between climate and the physicochemical parameters of the atmosphere on a global scale.
Since 2019, he has been serving as the Climate Envoy for Greece.
